Hi. I enjoyed looking through your site, reading your history, and seeing the photos of your grandfather at work. You are lucky to have those.

I also noticed a few things that may interest you. First, as you know, the map you show is the 1928 Railroad Map. The route shown in the dotted blue over the crest of the Cascades is actually over Tieton Pass, not White Pass. From the east the route over White Pass follows Clear Creek up toward the pass. That creek is shown on the map, but is not labeled. The map shows the route following the North Fork Tieton River up to Tieton Pass. I don’t remember enough of the White survey to recall if he also surveyed Tieton Pass. I do know it was considered as a possible rail route over the Cascades at one time.

In the first paragraph of your “History of the Cowlitz Chehalis & Cascade Ry and Northern Pacific” you have “As the valley became farmland the only alternative to abandonment was to push farther west, up into the Cascades.” That should be “east” not “west”.

And, I know you don’t say this explicitly, but the impression is given that the PCR actually did work its way over White Pass and on to Yakima. That was the dream, but it didn’t happen. They didn’t get close to White Pass. And, they didn’t have direct access to the Yakima Valley from the west side of the mountains.

Again, I enjoyed your site. Good luck with the layout.

Mr.Donahue; I enjoyed your comments concerning my Pacific Cascade Railway.
I did correct the west/east error in my CC&C history paragraph. Thank you.
I am curious, are you a historian, rail road enthusiast, or model rail roader?
Do you live anywhere near Vancouver, Washington, that we might meet?

Since the PCRy only exists in my imagination and as my model railroad, it can follow highway 12 across White Pass.
I have read and made copies of the 1878 survey reports from Charles A. White which are available in the Chehalis depot museum.
Yes C.A. White surveyed the west side several passes, including Tieton pass, White pass, and eventually Snoqualmie pass.
I look forward to a further exchange of ideas and information with you.
